Education for Information Technology Careers

As technology continues to change, the demand for workers in the information technology field continues to grow. Currently, the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that eight out of ten fast growing jobs in the United States are part of the technology field. Some of the jobs in this industry are computer programmers, computer systems analysts, and computer information systems managers. In order to enter this field, you must obtain the proper education and training.

There are several community colleges that offer certification programs or associate degrees in information technology. Often these community college programs are designed to meet the needs of local businesses in the area so students are trained to work for that company at the completion of the degree program. With these types of degrees, you may be able to work as a computer programmer or computer support specialist.

However, it is recommended that a bachelor’s degree or higher be obtained in order to move into higher paying positions or management roles. In today’s job market, many employers are looking for applicants who have bachelor’s degree in the computer field. In addition to a bachelor’s degree, employers are looking for people with experience, technical skills and the ability to communicate with all levels of people such as customers, other employees, and management.

Only eighteen percent of workers in the information technology field have graduate degrees. Taking GMAT prep courses is a great way to prepare yourself to take the GMAT admission exam for graduate school. Graduate degrees are often required for more technical jobs such as software or computer engineering. Many managers in the information technology field seek a master’s degree in business administration (MBA) in order to gain more business knowledge.

The salaries in this field range from $30,000 to $100,000 per year based on the location of the job, education, and experience.
